Today, we're diving into something many of you might have already heard about and use extensively: Black Friday.
You've probably heard of the day. Black Friday is a day that marks the start of Christmas shopping with lots of offers and discounts. It has become one of the biggest shopping days of the year, where stores, both online and physical, open their doors to great savings.
Black Friday has become an integral part of global shopping culture, but how has this spectacular shopping day evolved over the past three decades? Let's explore Black Friday's journey from an American tradition to a global shopping event, which is also anticipated, planned, and organized here in Denmark.
Black Friday originates from the USA and is traditionally the day after Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. The origin of the name "Black Friday" is somewhat debated, but one popular explanation is that it was used by the police in Philadelphia to describe the chaotic traffic and crowds that occurred the day after Thanksgiving. Another theory is that many stores went from being "in the red" (deficit) to "in the black" (profit) on this day because they sold so much.

Three decades ago, Black Friday was primarily an American event, marking the beginning of the Christmas shopping season the day after Thanksgiving. In the 1990s, American retailers began to leverage this day as an opportunity to boost their sales with unparalleled offers and discounts. It was a time when physical presence in stores was the norm, and consumers often stood in long queues to secure the best deals.
During the 2000s, the internet began to play a significant role in Black Friday. The first online Black Friday deals appeared, and consumers could now shop from their own homes. This drastically shifted the dynamics of retail, and many companies began to extend their offers to include Cyber Monday, the following Monday, which focused on online shopping.
Black Friday and Black Week are often a fun and different shopping week, as many companies come up with unique and creative campaigns. Competitions, live shopping, and various discounts are just some of the things you can find during Black Week.
The shopping experience can quickly become monotonous and perhaps even boring with online shopping, but during Black Week, there is a real focus on the consumer's experience, and therefore different things happen that make it refreshing to shop and browse online stores.
The many opportunities on Black Friday have led to endless possibilities to buy everything your heart desires at cheaper prices. This also applies to children's clothing, children's shoes, and toys, but how can you actually spend your money in the best possible way when it comes to Black Friday?
Buying children's clothes can be a challenge, especially when you're trying to balance quality and price. Children grow quickly, and keeping their wardrobe updated and tidy can be an expensive affair. It's often said that adults with young children are not only in the busiest period of their lives but also the most expensive. But in fact, with a little easy planning and forward thinking, you can save a significant amount of money. Not only on children's clothes but also on gifts for the upcoming holiday season.

The first step in planning a budget for children's clothing and toys is to figure out how much you can realistically spend. Consider the following 3 small points:
-
Determine your total clothing budget: Look at your total monthly expenses and decide how much you can allocate to children's clothing. You are the one with an overview of how your budget is structured. Some families do not include child benefits in their budget, while others do. Decide how you will do it and stick to the decision to maintain a continuous overview.
-
Prioritizing needs: Make a list of necessities such as winter jackets, shoes, boots, gifts, and basic clothing, and prioritize these in your budget. Set an agreed-upon amount for each item and stick to that amount to avoid your spending getting out of control. It's okay to spend a lot of money during Black Friday, but the most important thing is not to spend money you can't afford to lose.
-
Seasonal purchases: Consider what times of year you typically buy new clothes, and adjust your budget accordingly. Perhaps money needs to be set aside for winter, where outerwear, shoes, and boots will be purchased as a minimum. There's also December and Christmas, which are often expensive months for all families.
Once you have your budget under control and a clear overview of what you can spend on Black Friday, you can start actively working on what to buy. Does that sound like a lot of work? It doesn't have to be as time-consuming as it might sound. You just need to consider the following 5 points:
-
Make a wish list: Before Black Friday, you should have a clear and manageable list of the items you need so you can focus on good deals on exactly these things.
-
Think ahead: Do you need new shoes and new jackets for spring? Then you can advantageously buy a pair of sneakers one size larger, a jacket on sale that is also one size larger than what your child wears right now. If it doesn't fit by March, it can be resold without much loss, as you bought it on sale. There are many platforms where you can sell "used" items, so it shouldn't be a problem.
-
Prepare family and friends: Tell them that you buy Christmas presents early, so wish lists are ready by mid-November. Remember to check stores' return policies. Not all stores offer several months of returns, so be aware of this.
-
Compare prices: Check different online stores to find the best deals, and look at flyers. Google is excellent for comparing prices. So get your keyboard ready and have fun on Google.
-
Sign up for newsletters: Many stores send exclusive offers to their subscribers before, for example, Black Friday. This also applies to ZIDO!

Parents can also consider swapping clothes with other families or buying second-hand clothes to save money. Thrift stores and online marketplaces can be sources of great finds at a low price. Especially if there's something you're not 100% sure will be used, second-hand is a good way to try out a brand, a toy, or a certain type of clothing or shoes before investing in something similar new.
Black Friday can be a fantastic opportunity to make great purchases, but it is also a day where it is important to be aware as a consumer. Here are 4 important tips for navigating safely, quickly, and smartly through the day:
It can be tempting to buy items just because they are on sale, but it's important to consider whether you really need them. It's therefore a good idea to do as mentioned before and make a list of what you need to shop for and stick to it. This doesn't mean you can't buy clothes and shoes for spring, or that Christmas presents shouldn't be bought on Black Friday. Just be aware that there aren't suddenly 10 pairs of socks with your son's favorite action figure in your cart when you go to checkout. Just because they're 20% off, it doesn't mean it's the right time to buy them.
An item might appear to have a big discount, but it can be a good idea to compare prices with other stores. This ensures that you truly get the best price at the place you choose to shop. If the webshop only sells its own brand, like ZIDO, there aren't many other places to look to find the best price. If, on the other hand, you're shopping for clothes, toys, or household goods, there are many options. You can use Google's search function, which searches for products.
When shopping online, make sure the website is secure. Look for a padlock icon next to the URL and ensure the web address starts with "https://" to protect your payment information.
Unfortunately, many people are still being scammed online, and there is little that can be done once your money has left your account. Therefore, use secure shops and be sensible. Is the offer too good to be true? Then it probably is too good to be true.

Carefully check the return policies, especially on Black Friday, when it's often a bit quicker to pay for items in your shopping cart. You can, for example, check shipping costs and delivery times, but also return policies can be relevant if, for example, you are looking for Christmas gifts. It's a shame to have bought a Christmas gift that cannot be exchanged because the return period has expired.

Remember that a cold and wet season is approaching, so even though there are the coolest K-pop inspired sneakers in our shop, they are not suitable for recess right now. Instead, these two models can be used for school children:
At ZIDO we love shoes, and as temperatures drop and the weather changes from summer to winter, we are ready with our exclusive winter collection, where you can find boots such as ANNA and FRIDA. The models LUNA and ELLA are also part of our winter collection. All of them offer warmth and protection, while still managing to look fashionable.
ZIDO's SEBASTIAN is the ultimate winter boot with a robust construction, perfect for play and activities without limitations. This model offers both thermal insulation and a non-slip sole that can withstand the Danish winter. Another model that can be good for the active boy throughout the winter is the WILLIAM model, which combines style, comfort, and functionality. Think of a sneaker and a boot in one!
Of course, there are many other great models to choose from, so you can find the boots that best suit your child. Remember, it's always a good idea to take a look at our size guide so you can order the correct size the first time!
By planning a budget, prioritizing your children's clothing needs, and taking advantage of special offers like Black Friday or buying secondhand, you can ensure that your children always have the clothes they need without breaking the bank.
Remember, it's also a good idea to consider second-hand options to maximize your savings, even if it may seem daunting to many at first. Recycling also helps reduce overproduction of textiles. So in that way, you also do a (small) good deed.
